Day Hikes and Short walks.

North East Victoria offers some excellent hiking areas for anyone up going from small overnight hikes to the very serious hikers who do big hikes from a couple of days to even sections of the 680kms Australian Alps Walking Track which goes from Walhalla to Canberra. But this area also provides some wonderful places to go via small hikes which you can complete in a couple of hours or so.

Whenever heading out even just for a small hike you should carry some water, munchies or lunch, a first aid kit, hat and consider carrying a waterproof jacket and pants in case the weather changes. You should also let someone know where your planning to head to and when you plan to return. In most areas around the town etc mobile phone access is very good which can allow you to contact emergency personnel if required and always take your camera as the views around the Ovens Valley and up onto the mountains are spectacular all year round. All the tracks listed in this area are detailed and able to be done fairly easy in a few hours however be prepared for changes to weather and always carry enough water for your return trip, you should also let someone know where you planning go to just in case something goes wrong.

If you like to simply head out into the bush and happy to hike through the bush without tracks etc and you have GPS then maybe you would like the sport called Geocaching where you use your GPS to search for caches left in the bush by other people. I do this and have gone to many locations which I would have simply driven past or hiked past and seen some areas which are simply unreal. Check www.geocaching.com for more information and there are heaps of caches in are areas around Bright.
