When Bushwalking you need to carry all the equipment you will need  but some people leave some equipment back at their car or home. In 2005 some guys went up onto Mt Bogong during the winter but left their Tents in their car as they planned to camp inside Cleve Cole Hut, however they failed to get the hut and emergency people had to hike up during the night to find them after they called the Police and then brought them back. If they had a tent and been able to make ice bricks they could have setup their tent or had the knowledge and equipment to make a snow cave they could survived the night without emergency personnel needing to go up after them. See Snow Camping for more information and a photo showing my tent on the snow with a ice brick wall built offering protection for the tent.

See Essential Equipment for important stuff you should carry.

Here is a list of equipment of what normally carry.

As mentioned elsewhere the most important part of Bushwalking is Planning and this includes what equipment you need for your trip. You should think about what time of the year it is? Will you encounter snow or high temperature? Where will you need to camp, where will you find water and how much food will you need. Also think about emergency equipment such as EPIRBS, GPS, Communication equipment, First Aid Kit and any special equipment you may need such as Ice axes, snow shoes or skis, Crampons etc.

Below is a list of general equipment worth considering. (This is basically a list of what I carry - please only use as a guide.)

Importantly - Be prepared for all types of weather including heavy rain, snow and heavy fog which can cause navigation problems. Also make sure someone knows your planned route and camp locations incase you don't return on time. If your going away from your home area you can leave a list of the equipment, planning route and other information at any Police Station (They would be very happy to know where you where going if a search for you occurred.) just remember make sure you advise them when return...
